Most Americans struggle with their weight. Unscrupulous businesses have taken advantage of people’s desire to shed weight and achieve a healthy lifestyle. There are all sorts of miracle body cleansers, pills, and instant weight loss diets out there that are simply unhealthy.

Yes, diets that promise instant weight loss are appealing. Who doesn’t want to drop several dress sizes in a week? The reality is that these diets don’t work in the long run and can harm your body by depriving your system of essential nutrients. The best diets include a balanced diet, exercise, and natural boosters like acai berry supplements. Dieting the “old fashion” way may not yield fast acting results, but it will help you achieve a healthier, fitter body in the long run

Avoid Acai Extracts

The acai berry is becoming well-known as a super fruit. Acai berries contain anthocyanins, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and helpful fatty acids. These nutrients have been shown to improve the health of those who eat the berries or take acai supplements. As access to fresh acai berries is incredibly rare outside the Amazon, most people get their intake of this super fruit through supplements.

When purchasing an acai supplement you want to look for products that have been freeze dried. Freeze dried acai retain much more of their nutrients, particularly if the method used to dry was practical freeze drying. (Spray drying is cheaper, but the heat used in the process depletes the nutritional value). Avoid supplements labeled acai extract; the whole fruit is nutritious so only getting a sampling doesn’t do you much good, and really cheats you out of the benefits you could be getting.

Weight Loss Fact or Fiction

The acai berry is many things. It is rich in antioxidants which help your skin, hair, and nails. It is also a great source of dietary fiber. One thing that people have claimed about the acai berry is that by eating acai berries or taking acai berry capsules fat will melt right off your body, no matter how bad your eating and exercise habits are.

This is simply not true. It’s not true of any weight-loss supplement, despite claims to the contrary. This doesn’t mean that acai isn’t a powerful ally in the war against fat. Taking acai berry capsules, in conjunction with moderate diet and exercise, can help you lose more weight than just diet and exercise alone.

What is Acai Berry?

The acai (ah-sah-ee) is a wild berry that grows predominantly in the Brazilian rainforest. The berries come from a type of palm tree called Euterpe Olevacea which grows 10-30 meters tall. The fruit has a deep purple colored skin, much like a concord grape. Inside the berry is a single large seed.

For centuries, South Americans have harvested the acai berry and incorporated it heavily into their daily diets. Acai has become popular because of their reputation as a super food, meaning the berries are packed with healthy and beneficial nutrients and antioxidants. Acai also contains Omega-6 and Omega-9 acids which promote healthy, good cholesterol while limiting the bad. I hope this crash course has given you a bit more insight into what is acai berry.

Will the Acai Berry be FDA Approved?

You’ve probably read the claims and examined the studies that show the acai berry is a super fruit with many health benefits; yet, you are hesitant to try the fruit. Why is that? For some people, the reason is the fruit is not approved by the FDA. What they fail to realize is the FDA is unlikely to pass any sort of judgment on the fruit itself.

The FDA has not officially approved or disproved the acai berry or acai berry research simply because the fruit is the produce item of another country. The berry requires rainforest conditions to grow into a super fruit. Since the acai berry is unlikely to ever be sold in the U.S. as a produce item, the FDA has little incentive to spend money researching and approving the berry. Specific acai juice bottling plants inside the U.S. may or may not have FDA approval, but this has less to do with the fruit itself and more to do with conditions at the factory.

The Benefits of Acai

Acai berries come from a tree called the acai palm. Most acai palms on the planet can be found in large concentrations in Central and South America. Countries like Belize, Brazil and Peru are particularly well populated with the acai palm. With a preference for swamps and floodplains, these tall, slender palms have found a welcoming home in these countries. As a boon to their export economies the acai berry has quickly become a popular additive to all types of foods and can even be found in a number of dietary supplements and vitamins.

But what are the real acai berry benefits? It’s most notable health benefit is as an antioxidant. By inhibiting the creation of free radicals that damage cells, acai is instrumental in staving off cancer and a host of other maladies. Speculation also exists that acai may be helpful in detoxification. Another benefit is a boost in energy and an overall feeling of good health. Though many of these claims have not been adequately studied, anecdotal evidence suggests that acai truly is the miracle fruit of the decade.

Antioxidants

So just what is an antioxidant anyway? Antioxidants, true to their name, prevent the natural occurrence of oxidized molecules in our bodies. By putting themselves at the forefront of oxidation activities, antioxidants replace other molecules in the oxidation process. Since oxidation often generates free radicals that damage other cells, antioxidants are important in the prevention of free radical generation and their subsequent cell damage.

The acai berry has taken center stage among antioxidants. With a unique flavor this popular food additive has become a staple in diets across the country. Whether it’s a weight-loss diet or just an everyday lifestyle change, acai has taken the world by storm. Boasting effective antioxidant properties this new superfood can be found in juices, yogurts and prepared meals. By preventing the creation of free radicals acai is now credited with being an effective cancer-fighting supplement.
